Analysis Shows Massachusetts Population Growth Slowing but Still Positive

The institute’s Massachusetts Population Estimates Program reports today that the Commonwealth’s population continued to grow modestly in the most recent U.S. Census Bureau estimates, reaching 7.15 million residents in 2025. According to the Institute’s analysis of the Census Bureau’s Vintage 2025 data, Massachusetts added 15,524 residents between July 1, 2024 and July 1, 2025—a 0.2% increase and a notable slowdown from the 1.0% growth recorded the previous year.

Unlike recent years, natural increase—births exceeding deaths—was the largest driver of population growth in 2025. Net international immigration remained positive but declined sharply from its 2024 peak, though it continued to more than offset ongoing domestic outmigration.

Among New England states, Massachusetts added more residents than any other in the past year and ranked second in numeric population growth in the Northeast, underscoring the Commonwealth’s continued demographic resilience despite slowing momentum.
