Raising awareness, promoting partnership: Springfield event highlights the skills of visually impaired workers

Last week, more than 20 Western Massachusetts employers gathered at the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield for an information session and networking event, co-sponsored by the UMass Donahue Institute’s Organizational Development and Learning Solutions group and the Massachusetts Commission for the Blind. The event showcased the skills and qualifications of visually impaired and blind individuals and included a hands-on exhibit of various technological accommodations and services available for today’s workplace.

Janet LaBreck, the MCB’s Commissioner discussed the agency’s role in providing this wide range of services to both consumers and employers and highlighted successes and achievements that have resulted through partnerships with organizations such as Work Without Limits, the Massachusetts Department of Developmental Services and the Perkins School for the Blind. Commissioner LaBreck stressed her desire to increase MCB’s partnerships and to identify new areas for creative collaboration.

A follow-up job fair, which will introduce employers and job-seekers represented by the MCB, is currently being planned for this fall.
