New England Head Start STEAM Exhibition Highlights Innovation in Early Childhood Education
STEAM Event May 19 in Devens, MA
On May 19, 2026, 88 early childhood educators from Head Start programs across New England gathered in Devens, Massachusetts, for the annual New England Head Start STEAM Exhibition, hosted by the UMass Amherst Donahue Institute. The event brought together educators, program leaders, and practitioners to explore innovative approaches to integrating science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) into early learning environments.
The day opened with a keynote presentation, “Beyond Behavior: Integrating Expressive Arts in STEAM to Recognize & Unlock Hidden Strengths,” delivered by Cecile Reve and Gabriela Kotliar, co-founders of ARTrelief. Their session emphasized the importance of expressive arts in supporting children’s development and uncovering strengths that may not be visible through traditional approaches.
Throughout the morning, exhibitors from Early Head Start and Head Start grant recipients showcased both home-based and center-based STEAM curricula aligned with the Head Start Early Learning Outcomes Framework. Across 26 interactive tables, attendees explored hands-on activities and family engagement strategies designed to extend STEAM learning into the home environment. Featured exhibits included Building a Water Wheel (Engineering with Moving Water), STEAM in the Kitchen, Light & Shadows, Building Structures, Magnet Painting, and Sensory Exploration.
In the afternoon, participants continued their learning outdoors during STEAM in the Great Outdoors. Facilitated by Head Start staff from Communities United and Quincy Community Action Program, the session provided opportunities for educators to observe, experiment with natural materials, and discuss practical strategies for incorporating STEAM into children’s outdoor play experiences.
All attendees received STEAM resource materials along with access to a digital collection of comprehensive lesson plans aligned with each exhibit, supporting continued implementation in their programs.
