Governor cites UMDI Due Diligence report for Mass budget recommendations

On January 25th, the Patrick-Murray administration unveiled their FY2013 budget recommendation, a plan that bulks up education spending, while targeting the Registry of Motor Vehicles, a seniors’ meal program and a Norfolk prison for a series of cutbacks. Additionally, levying new taxes on candy, soda and cigarettes, along with extending a bottle deposit to bottled water and other beverages would increase revenue.

The Massachusetts Economic Due Diligence Report, prepared by the UMass Donahue Institute’s Economic and Public Policy unit, was used as a resource by the governor’s office in assembling the budget. The report, a compilation of population characteristics; personal income, consumer prices and poverty; employment; education and technology; and the state’s comparative economic performance, has been funded by the State Treasurer since the 1990s. Governor Patrick requested use of the report two years ago, and it is included in the budget document section of the governor’s website.
