Eric Nakajima to speak at CHAPA Breakfast Forum

At a breakfast forum on Thursday, May 10th at MassHousing, the Institute’s Eric Nakajima will speak on the topic, The Fiscal Impact of Affordable Housing Development on Municipalities:  Myth vs. Reality

One of the most common arguments used against new affordable housing development is the impact it will have on municipal services, especially the public schools.  The Citizen’s Housing and Planning Association (CHAPA) engaged the University of Massachusetts Donahue Institute to prepare a comprehensive report on the impacts that mixed-income homeownership developments have had on municipal services over time.  This new study, which covers the most dominant type of affordable housing development over the past several years, will be unveiled at this forum.

Mr. Nakajima will present the report’s key findings, which are based on a case study approach using extensive data and local interviews.  The report also critiques existing fiscal impact methodologies and offers recommendations on ways to more accurately measure impacts on schools and other services.  A panel of respondents will react to the report and present their perspectives based on their experience working with municipalities.

Registration for the breakfast forum begins at 9:00 a.m. with the presentation beginning at 9:30 a.m. and lasting until 11:30 a.m. MassHousing is located at ONE Beacon Street in Boston and the event will be held on the 29th floor. The cost of the event is   $15.00 for CHAPA members and $20 for non-members (includes continental breakfast).  Space is limited and you must register by Monday, May 7.  No refunds will be provided to those who register but do not attend the forum.
