CareerWorks awarded $1M grant to assist workers
CareerWorks, the workforce and business development agency administered through the UMass Donahue Institute, has received a portion of a $1M grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Labor to help provide re-employment services to workers affected by lay-offs at Haemonetics Corp, a Braintree-based developer of medical technology and services.
The grant enables CareerWorks and the South Shore Career Centers to offer a full range of services that include career assessments, case management, job development, and placement services.
"Workers impacted by these layoffs will need assistance to gain suitable employment in new industries and occupations," said U.S. Secretary of Labor Thomas E. Perez. "This federal grant we're awarding today will help these individuals by providing a full array of re-employment services, opening up paths to new careers."
John Murray, director of CareerWorks, added “Receiving this grant will enable us to work with approximately 83 people in our region. Having the company certified under the Trade Adjustment Assistance Act allows job seekers to attend training for up to two years. During that time employees can receive training in English, if needed, as well as skills training, helping them increase their marketability for today’s changing job market.”
The current unemployment rate in the Brockton area is 7.3 percent, compared to Massachusetts’ 5.6 percent rate and the overall US rate of 6.3 percent.
