University of Massachusetts Economic Contribution Analysis FY 2015

This report performs an objective analysis to quantify the economic contributions of the University of Massachusetts system and its campuses on the Commonwealth's economy.

Some of the findings include:

  • UMass not only makes a direct contribution to the Massachusetts economy through the spending and jobs supported by its academic, administration, and construction activities, but also generates a "ripple effect" that leads to an even larger impact in the economy as a result of demand on suppliers of goods and services as well as employee spending.

  • The UMass system was responsible for generating $6.2 billion in economic activity in FY 2015. The $6.2 billion of economic activity generated by the University is 10 times greater than the state investment in the University of $621 million.

  • The University’s direct employment of 16,777 full-time and part-time faculty and staff, combined with 26,780 jobs in the Commonwealth generated by spending of the University, its employees and students, results in a total jobs impact of 43,647.
