Massachusetts Military Installations’ Economic Contributions

This economic contribution analysis found that Massachusetts’ six military bases support more than 46,000 jobs and contribute more than $14.2 billion to the Commonwealth’s economy annually. The study, underwritten by MassDevelopment on behalf of Lieutenant Governor Timothy P. Murray’s Military Asset & Security Strategy Task Force used data compiled from each of Massachusetts’ six military installations, Barnes Air National Guard Base, Fort Devens, Hanscom Air Force Base, Massachusetts Military Reservation, U.S. Army Natick Soldier Systems Center and Westover Air Reserve Base, examining each one separately under the same method and time frame in order to allow for a uniform assessment.

Through this comprehensive study, researchers found that the Commonwealth’s military installations provide personnel and equipment to address multiple regional and national security missions, serve as important regional centers for employment, and interact as important economic engines in the Commonwealth.
