Income Inequality in Massachusetts, 1980 -2006

This article, published as the regional feature in the latest issue of MassBenchmarks (Volume 10, Issue 2), examines changing income distribution in the state and its regions, showing a long-term pattern of increasing income inequality in the Commonwealth.  The team of analysts included Rebecca Loveland, Raija Vaisanen and Roy Williams from the Economic and Public Policy research unit and UMass Amherst Professor and MassBenchmarks Executive Editor Robert Nakosteen.  The article documents a widening gap between the haves and have-nots within every region of the state and, strikingly, between the Greater Boston and Northeast regions and the rest of the Commonwealth.
