Way Finders releases findings from its first-ever western Massachusetts housing study

The study, titled “Building Homes. Building Futures,” was conducted by Way Finders and the UMass Donahue Institute to assess housing demand, needs, and impacts across Berkshire, Franklin, Hampshire, and Hampden Counties. The study suggests that diverse needs, rather than demographic factors, drive the housing crisis in western Massachusetts.
Kerry Spitzer, Senior Research Manager at the UMass Donahue Institute, noted, “We have similar rates of cost burdens in terms of people spending more than 30% of their income on housing in the region. We’re seeing rising rents; we’re seeing increasing cost of homeownership.”
