Worcester Telegram & Gazette covers Mass Manufacturing Job Openings Report

An article in the Worcester Telegram & Gazette profiled findings from a report on job openings in Massachusetts’ manufacturing sector. The report, compiled by the UMass Donahue Institute’s Economic and Public Policy Research unit and the Center for Regional Economic Competitiveness, found that there were nearly 73,000 manufacturing job openings in 2011, but only 5.5 percent of openings were for traditional production jobs.  The article cites sales and marketing as the most sought-after skills, with 45 percent of all job openings requiring some college or post-secondary education.

Martin Romitti, director of Economic and Public Policy Research at the Donahue Institute is quoted in the article. Seeing opportunity for job seekers in the state’s manufacturing sector, he says, “It takes a great assortment of jobs and skill sets to make these enterprises successful. There is a much richer diversity of career opportunities in manufacturing than is often realized.”
