Stores gear up for sales tax holiday

“Consumer confidence is up, and sales are up consistently,” said Jon B. Hurst, president of the Retailers Association of Massachusetts. “Not gangbusters up, but they’re up, and that's a good sign. We seem to be finally moving past this roller-coaster type of thing - good month, bad month.” Confidence is up because economic conditions have improved for many since the Great Recession. Contributors to MassBenchmarks, a journal published by the University of Massachusetts Donahue Institute and the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, estimated the Massachusetts economy grew at an annualized rate of 2.1 percent during the second quarter this year.
