Worcester Business Journal Online: Devens Succeeds In Reinvention

A report completed by the Economic and Public Policy Research group at the UMass Donahue Institute was cited in a Worcester Business Journal article outlining the successful redevelopment of the former Devens military base. Fort Devens, which was the Army's New England base of operations for nearly 80 years, closed in 1997, shedding thousands of jobs in the process. In recent years, the base has been converted into a dynamic site for commercial enterprises and attracted international high-tech and pharmaceutical companies, in addition to the brand new film production facility, New England Studios. As determined by the UMDI report, “Profile and Economic Contributions: Businesses and organizations located in Devens, Massachusetts," this renaissance has given way to 3,208 jobs and contributed $1.45 billion to the state’s economy.
