WBUR reports MassBenchmarks findings

Boston's NPR news station, WBUR reported on MassBenchmarks’ latest findings, which show that the Massachusetts economy grew at a 2.3 percent rate during the last quarter of 2011, down from the previous quarter’s 3.2 percent rate and lower than the U.S. rate of 2.8 percent. This is the first time since the second quarter of 2010 that Massachusetts has lagged behind the nation in growth. Economists weren’t surprised by the estimates and expect the state to rebound in the first half of 2012.

Robert Nakosteen, MassBenchmarks Executive Editor, explained “Every quarter since the first quarter of 2010, the state had grown faster than the nation, and we knew at some point we were going to come down to earth, that we were going to have to be led by the national growth rate, and this is what happened this quarter.” Because the state has so many trading partners in the eurozone, Massachusetts is more exposed than other states to the risk of a European recession.
