WBUR: Report Revises Down Mass. Economic Growth In 2011

WBUR ran a short segment on the revisions to the state’s economic growth numbers, as recorded in the most recent MassBenchmarks bulletin. MassBenchmarks originally calculated the state’s GDP at 2.9 percent. That number was revised to 1.8 percent after it was found that the state created only 9,100 jobs in 2011, rather than the 41,000 that were initially reported.

Northeastern University economist and MassBenchmarks senior contributing editor Alan Clayton-Matthews doesn’t believe that the revised economic picture will drastically change estimates going forward. He’s still forecasting stronger growth in the state economy and jobs this year.

“I don’t see any reason to believe why a slower estimate of growth last year would result in a slower projection of growth going forward,” he said. “In fact the beginning of the year looked like it started off pretty good.”
