U.S. grant to help teach history

Amherst-The teaching of American history received a boost recently when the University of Massachusetts Amherst and the Amherst-Pelham Regional Schools received a federal $864,000, three-year grant to work with teachers in Western and Central Massachusetts.

The partnership of the school district and the UMass Donahue Institute at the Amherst campus culminated in a program called the Constitutional History Renewal Project. The program featured weekend seminars and two-week summer sessions designed to use debates about the adoption of the U.S. Constitution and its amendments as a centerpiece to teach American history.

Faculty and support for the program will come from the history and political science departments at UMass.

The grant was awarded out of the Teaching American History program of the U.S. Department of Education.
