Seven years in, Massachusetts’ cannabis equity operators struggle to succeed

Our report on cannabis industry equity is highlighted in today's Boston Globe piece. The piece covers the inequities created by the criminalization of marijuana in Massachusetts and the attempts by the legal industry to correct those inequities while highlighting an attempt to roll back statewide legalization.

Our report, "Identifying Massachusetts Areas Disproportionately Impacted by Drug Prohibition," was released in 2021

These disparities persist despite cannabis decriminalization in Massachusetts in 2008, medical legalization in 2012, and adult-use legalization in 2016. There are strong correlations between poverty and involvement in drug selling and/or drug use, and after incarceration, many individuals face steep challenges to gaining legal employment, which can set up cycles of poverty that last generations.
