Sentinel & Enterprise: Mass Republicans press for probe on jobs data
The Sentinel & Enterprise, the daily newspaper of the Fitchburg area, reported that in light of recent revisions to state employment data, Massachusetts Republicans are calling for an investigation into how the state comes up with employment numbers. The state was believed to have added 41,000 jobs during 2011, but revised data puts that number at 9,100. State auditor Suzanne Bump rejected the GOP's request for an audit last week, saying jobs data is compiled by the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics, not the state.
The article cites MassBenchmarks, which recalibrated the state’s GDP based on the revised data and found that Massachusetts experienced a 1.8 percent growth, down from the original estimate of 2.9 percent. The U.S. GDP was 1.6 percent.
