New England Public Radio: Can Online Courses Reduce High School Dropout Rates? New Study Aims To Find Out

New England Public Radio interviewed Eliot Levine, a Senior Research Manager in Applied Research and Program Evaluation group about a two-year study he is leading, looking at the impact of online courses on dropout rates in 19 high schools throughout Massachusetts.

According to Levine, “Many students have gotten credits that they wouldn’t have earned otherwise, or have been able to rejoin their grade level, or have been able to graduate as a result of the flexibility and alternative pathway that these programs offer.”

He says it seems likely this will be a promising approach for some, but believes not enough evidence exists to determine whether the courses are effective for students who are considered high-risk of dropping out. The study, which involves some six thousand students, will examine that question.
