The Thunderbirds have had an overall economic impact of $126 million in their six seasons of existence, according to a University of Massachusetts Donahue Institute study the team released Wednesday prior to the team’s home opener Saturday night against the Hartford Wolfpack at the MassMutual Center. And, surprisingly for Rod Motamedi, assistant director of the Donahue Institute's Economic and Public Policy Research group, over the past two years spending outside the arena at restaurants, bars, shops and other attractions has exceeded spending inside the arena with the team.
“It shows it’s bringing people to the city,” he said.
