Milford Daily News: State: 9,100 jobs added in February; unemployment stays at 6.9%
The State House News Service cited the recent MassBenchmarks bulletin in an article appearing in the Milford Daily News. The Daily News article outlined Massachusetts job growth in January and February of 2012, indicating that the state added 13,900 jobs in January and another 9,100 in February. This uptick in jobs numbers came just days after MassBenchmarks released its bulletin, revealing that in 2011, the state only added 9,100 jobs, rather than the 41,000 that were initially reported. In light of those revisions, MassBenchmarks recalibrated the state’s GDP, finding the state’s economic recovery to be less robust than previously believed.
While the employment data is released by the state, it is compiled by the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics. Patrick administration officials questioned the accuracy of the Bureau’s data after the discrepancy was revealed. The agency responded that the revisions were the result of changes in its job-counting formula meant to improve accuracy.
