Census estimates 17 percent in area are foreign-born

Immigrants make up roughly a quarter of the population in Framingham and are a larger presence than a decade ago in towns like Milford, according to new U.S. Census estimates.
The figures offer a detailed look at the roles of foreign-born people in the region.
Of Framingham’s 66,411 residents, about 16,875, or 25.4 percent, were born outside the United States, the estimates say. Immigrants also account for 5,311 of Milford’s 24,957 residents, or 21.3 percent, and 6,858 of Marlborough’s 37,963 residents, or 18.1 percent.
Newcomers to the country are a larger presence in these towns than the state average of 14.1 percent, which is up from 12 percent in the 2000 Census.
