Springfield embarks on comprehensive housing study
Springfield has launched its first comprehensive housing study in decades, aiming to better understand housing gaps, affordability challenges, and future development needs as the city continues its downtown revival, according to a recent MassLive report. The city has partnered with the UMass Donahue Institute, whose researchers bring deep expertise in housing market analysis, demographic trends, and regional planning to the effort.
Drawing on the Institute’s prior housing research in Western Massachusetts, the study will assess current housing supply, projected demand, and barriers to new development, with an emphasis on equity and economic growth. City leaders say findings from the UMass Donahue Institute will help guide policy decisions, attract investment, and ensure future housing production meets the needs of residents at all income levels.
