UMass census analysis: Hampden County is Massachusetts' 6th-fastest growing county since 2000

Hampden County was the sixth-fastest growing county in the state since 2000, largely because of newcomers from other countries, while Berkshire County lost the most population in the state on a percentage basis, according to a University of Massachusetts analysis of new census numbers. The U.S. Census Bureau on Tuesday released population estimates for all counties from 2000 to 2009. Susan Strate, manager of population estimates for the university’s Donahue Institute in Hadley, said international migration is boosting Hampden County. “Hampden is really leading in Western Massachusetts,” she said. Hampden county’s population is 471,081, up 3.2 percent since 2000; Hampshire, 156,044, up 2.4 percent; Franklin, 71,778, up 0.4 percent, and Berkshire, 129,288, down 4 percent, the institute’s analysis said.
