Beyond the headlines: A Pakistani’s unbiased look at American life
Fatima Batool, a 2024 exchange student from Pakistan who joined her undergraduate colelagues for a summer program run by the Civic Initiative, reflects on her anxieties before and experiences during her time at UMass Amherst.
Earlier in the year, I had been selected by the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad to join a 20-person group of undergraduate students to study public policy for five weeks at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
I still remember the day I arrived in the United States, my heart racing with excitement and a hint of nervousness. As a Pakistani, I had grown up with a mix of stereotypes and misconceptions about America. But I was determined to experience it for myself.
