Doing up the town with art and culture: Amherst joins the state’s 2019 ArtWeek project with a range of events
Painted in 2018 at the invitation of the UMass Civic Initiative and the Amherst Business Improvement District, the "Amherst BID Trolley" was the centerpiece of a Pakistan cultural event in downtown Amherst on May 2. The exhibit was part of a statewide arts celebration called "ArtWeek". Alongside the trolley, dance lessons were given while traditional music played. Visitors to the exhibit also had their names translated into Urdu script. The exhibit received funding from the Boch Center's Music Drives Us program.

Check out the colorfully painted “Amherst BID Trolley,” which has been designed by Phool Patti, a group of artists from Karachi, Pakistan as a classic example of Pakistani “truck art,” with iconic images of both Pakistan and Amherst. Information on the imagery and expressions on the trolley will be available, and Urdu writers will translate visitors’ names into the calligraphic Urdu script.
