Last year, the Commonwealth lost far more residents than it gained from other states. However, the overall population has increased slightly, fueled by international migration.
If these domestic migration trends continue, they could spell trouble for the state’s financial outlook, experts say.
“It’s hard to ignore what housing costs are here in Massachusetts,” said Mark Melnik, director of economic and public policy research at the University of Massachusetts Donahue Institute. “Putting the 20 percent together to buy a home is quite different than where I grew up in Northeastern Ohio.”
