Boston Globe: Massachusetts unemployment rate rises to 7.2 percent in July, highest level since Sept. 2011
Following the release of the state’s latest unemployment figures, The Boston Globe featured an article on the lackluster economic conditions in Massachusetts, quoting Economic and Public Policy Research group director Dan Hodge.
With Massachusetts unemployment rising to 7.2 percent, Hodge notes that the state unemployment rate has risen in each of the past three months as the economy has deteriorated under the weight of steep federal budget cuts and a slowing global economy.
“The unemployment rate is going up while the US unemployment rate is going down,” Hodge said of the report. “So it’s definitely disappointing in that respect.” US unemployment averaged 7.4 percent last month, down from 7.6 percent in June.
