Boston Globe: Economists hopeful Mass. growth will continue

The Boston Globe published an article discussing the latest analysis of the Massachusetts economy, as presented in a summary by MassBenchmarks economists. MassBenchmarks is the journal of the Massachusetts economy published in cooperation with the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston. Members of the editorial board include economists from UMass, Northeastern University, Boston University, Harvard, MIT, Wellesley College, the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., and State Street Corp. They meet quarterly and release a summary of their discussions.

Sequestration threatens crucial segments of the state’s economy, including technology and academic research centers which are dependent on federal funding, but the improving job and real estate markets, along with stronger global economic conditions should save the state from returning to recession.

The economists said 2012 was a relatively good year for the Massachusetts economy, noting that unemployment has hovered around 6.5 percent in recent months, much lower than the national rate, which remains closer to 8 percent.
