Boston Globe covers jobs report
The Boston Globe featured an article on the Massachusetts Manufacturing Job Openings Report, released by the UMass Donahue Institute and the Center for Regional Economic Competitiveness. The report found that there were nearly 73,000 manufacturing job openings in 2011, more than any other industry sector except health care.
While the large number of openings is a sign that the state’s manufacturing sector is recovering from the recent recession, traditional assembly line jobs have been largely supplanted by positions in sales and customer service, computer and information technology, and management; areas where the demand for qualified workers is not being met. According to the data, nearly half of the jobs available in Massachusetts manufacturing require some college or post-secondary education.
