Boston Business Journal highlights findings from Mass manufacturing jobs report

Boston Business Journal included the findings of a report on job openings in Massachusetts’ manufacturing sector, compiled by the UMass Donahue Institute and the Center for Regional Economic Competitiveness. The report found that Massachusetts companies advertised for nearly 73,000 manufacturing jobs throughout 2011, but only a small fraction (4,036 openings) were for traditional production occupations, such as machinists, assemblers and quality inspectors.

The occupations most sought after by manufacturers in the state included sales and customer service representatives, computer and information technology-related positions, and managers. For all Massachusetts manufacturing companies, the largest percentage of advertised job openings were in the computer equipment subsector, closely followed by the pharmaceutical and medicine sub-sector.
