'Head Start with Art' expands its horizons

The Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Massachusetts recently hosted early childhood educators from several Head Start grantees in order to discuss introducing an innovative program that introduces young children to art museums.

“Head Start with Art” has been running for the last five years and has primarily included only grantees from Berkshire County. This year, the program was looking to expand into the areas around the Berkshires. That included not only reaching out to other Head Start agencies but also to other art museums.

The UMass Donahue Institute’s New England Head Start Training & Technical Assistance group was asked to contact and help bring in other New England Head Start programs. Early Childhood Specialist Shannon Shaw made those connections possible. “We were there to support the grantees in getting ‘Head Start with Art’ into their curricula,” said Shaw. Also attending the Clark Art Institute event was Systems Specialist Anne Hemmer who observed the program’s potential for other Head Start grantees throughout New England.
