Amherst Bulletin: Iraqis study leadership skills on 6-week exchange

The Amherst Bulletin published an article that profiled four students participating in the Iraqi Young Leaders Program (IYLP), a six-week student exchange program administered by the Civic Initiative at the UMass Donahue Institute and the US Embassy in Baghdad.  The IYLP brings 25 Iraqi students to the UMass Amherst campus for courses and cultural excursions centered on civic life and public policy.

While much of the program focuses on public policy and public health, a community service component brought students to work with the Amherst Senior Center and deliver Meals on Wheels to homebound seniors and introduced them to the context and culture of public health. The four students plan to apply their experiences to careers in politics, non-governmental organizations, medicine and agriculture.
